Honda EU2200i Review: The Quiet, Reliable One (and You Pay for It)

The Honda EU2200i is the small generator other small generators get compared to. It's quiet enough to talk over, light enough to carry, runs all night on less than a gallon of gas at light loads, and owners keep them for years. It costs a lot more than generators with similar specs, and it's small. For home backup, that means it keeps the fridge, internet and lights on, not the house.
Buy it if you want a quiet, dependable generator for RV trips and camping that can also keep the fridge, freezer, internet, lights and phones going in an outage, and you'll run it for years.
Skip it if you need to run a well pump, central AC, or anything on 240V, or you want to connect it to a home transfer switch. For that, look at the Westinghouse WGen11500DFc or the DuroMax XP12000EH.

What I Like
It's really quiet
48 dBA at light load is quieter than a normal conversation. Even at full load it's 57 dBA. Owners bring this up more than anything else, and it's why these are welcome in campgrounds and don't annoy the neighbors during an outage. For comparison, the big home generators reviewed here are rated at 74 dBA, and every 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud.
Built to last, and it starts
Owners describe it as one of the best-built machines they've owned, and many have run theirs for years. It usually starts on the first or second pull. Reliable starting is really what you're paying for.
Sips fuel
8.1 hours on less than a gallon at 1/4 load means an overnight run with the fridge and a few lights uses less than a gallon of gas. Eco mode lets the engine slow down when demand is light, which is where the savings come from.
Clean power, CO-MINDER, and an app
It's an inverter, so the power is clean enough for laptops, TVs, phones, and modern appliance electronics. CO-MINDER shuts the engine down if carbon monoxide builds up. The Bluetooth app shows output and runtime and sends maintenance reminders.
You can double it later
Parallel a second EU2200i and you have up to 4,400 watts. That's enough to run a 13,500 BTU RV air conditioner, and you can still carry each unit on its own.
What I Don't Like
The price
Honda lists it at $1,199. You can buy generators with the same wattage for much less. Owners mostly agree the quality is worth it, but you should go in knowing you're paying for the name, the quietness, and the longevity, not more watts.
1,800 running watts is small for home backup
It'll start and run a fridge, or a fridge plus lights and internet, but a fridge and a chest freezer together plus a microwave is too much. It's 120V only, so no well pump, no 240V circuits, and no real home transfer switch setup. Owners also note that big loads like deep fryers and large compressors are beyond it.
Only two outlets
One duplex outlet. There's no RV-style 30A outlet on this model. The Yamaha EF2200iS has one, which matters to RV owners.
Gas only
Third-party propane conversion kits exist, but they're not from Honda and can affect your warranty. If you want dual fuel in a small generator, this isn't it.
Lighter than most, not "light"
47.4 pounds dry, a few more with fuel. Most people can carry it with the single handle, but some owners wish it were lighter.

Fuel Math
- Light load (about 450W, like a fridge and lights): 8.1 hours per tank, about 2.8 gallons a day.
- Full rated load (1,800W): 3.2 hours per tank, about 7 gallons a day.
The small tank is the catch. At light load, you're refilling about every 8 hours. Keep a few stabilized gas cans handy.

The Honda is quieter, lighter, and smarter. The Yamaha runs longer per tank and has the RV outlet. For home backup and camping, I'd pick the Honda. For RVs, the Yamaha's 30A outlet is hard to pass up.
